Congratulations to Disney and all cast members aboard the ships and on the island! Disney Parks Blog announced today that Disney’s Castaway Cay was named the “Top Cruise Line Private Island” for the second year in a row by the annual Cruise Critic Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards. As if that weren’t enough for applause, Castaway Cay is also the most highly rated island of all the islands in the Caribbean! The Cruise Critic awards are based completely on reviews from cruisers who rate and review their experiences on cruisecritic.com.
A Brief History of Castaway Cay
Until 1996 Castaway Cay was known as “Gorda Cay”; it was then that Disney purchased the island from the Bahamian government on a 99-year land lease (expires in 2095). The intention was to use the island exclusively for Disney Cruise Line. But this wasn’t its first tie to Disney history – in 1983, the island was used to film scenes from the Tom Hanks film Splash. The film of course was a favorite of former Disney CEO, Michael Eisner and inspired the name of the Disney Parks attraction, Splash Mountain in 1989.
The Disney Company spent $25 million in construction costs to shape the island, move sand and build the structures. About 50,000 truckloads of sand had to be dredged in from the Atlantic Ocean to provide more shallow water area and beaches.
So congrats again on the second consecutive achievement and keep making the magic at sea!
